Verdi VFD firefighters Carson Larsen and Anna Mathiasen participated in a career day event at UNR's Upward Bound Program on Saturday, Feb. 22.
The Upward Bound program is designed to give high school students who are first generation college students information about how higher education is important for various careers. Firefighters Carson and Anna and gave a 30 minute presentation to three groups of 15 students to inform them about the firefighting profession.
The young woman in these photos who is trying on structure gear is 16 years old. Her name is Josie. When the presentation began she didn't seem to have any interest, but as it continued she became very enthusiastic and began asking questions. She asked "how much does all that gear weigh"? So I invited her to come down and try it on. She was a little bit apprehensive, but as you can see by the smile on her face she was very excited about it. She said that firefighting is now an interest for her. There were other students who seemed interested as well.
